David Bowie changed his name.

Shocker! David Bowie, like many other performers, changed his name. He was born David Jones and originally performed under the name Davie Jones. In 1966 he changed his name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees. The name Bowie was taken from the American James Bowie who fought at the Alamo.

Ronnie Wood played with the Rolling Stones for 17 years before he became a full member.

At the end of 1974 Mick Taylor quit the Rolling Stones. The next year the band began auditioning new guitarists to replace him. In May of 1975 Ronnie Wood was chosen to be the new member. He had already had some success with The Faces and The Jeff Beck Group. When he first joined the band he was paid a salary, unlike the other members who would split the bands revenues between them. This arrangement carried on till 1992 when Bill Wyman left the group and Ronnie Wood was made a full member of the band.

Billy Joel was the first artist to release an album on compact disc.

In 1982 Billy Joel released 52nd street. It marked an important moment in music history, since it was the first album released on CD (compact disc). This marked a major shift in the way consumers got their music. CDs could hold a lot more music than a vinyl record, so albums could be longer and releases that might previously needed two records could be one CD. The CD is now still the standard format for buying music physically, but more and more people are getting their music digitally. Think, when was the last time you went to a store and physically bought music?

The Beatles were originally The Quarrymen.

The lineup that is now considered the Beatles was formed in 1962 when Ringo Starr joined the band, but the first incarnation of the band was formed in 1957 by John Lennon and some of his friends. This band was called The Quarrymen. Of the next couple years Paul McCartney and George Harrison joined and by 1960 all the original members, besides John, has left. After trying a couple different names they settled on The Beatles.
