Rome is believed to be the first city to reach a population of one million.

There is still debate as to which city was the first to reach one million people, but many people agree that it was ancient Rome. This milestone was achieved around the year 5BC. The first city with documented proof of reaching a population of one million was London England, which happened around 1811.

The Empire State Building was originally built to accommodate airships.

Originally the top of the Empire State Building had a mooring mast that could be used by airships. The plan was for the airships to connect with the mast and have passengers load and unload by a gangplank. The plan did not work since the air currents around the top of the building were too strong to allow for secure and safe docking. Only once did an airship ever dock. In September of 1931 a small airship was able to dock for 3 minutes.

The current NFL and MLB are both the result of mergers.

It is a common situation in business that once a company is success a competitor will appear and try to replace it. The NFL and MLB both are made of an older established league that merged with a new league that challenged it. In 1966 the NFL announced a merger with the competing AFL. 13 of the original NFL teams became the NFC and the AFL teams along with four NFL teams became the AFC. The National League in baseball was around for 28 years before the World Series created a matchup between the its champion and the champion of the American League. Since 1903 the two leagues have met for the World Series and only in the year 2000 did the two league become a single legal entity.

France created left versus right politics

The terms right wing politics and left wing politics have become a standard part of the political lexicon. The origins of the terms are credited to the French National Assembly of 1791. At this time the assembly members that were more conservative in their views sat on the right side of the chamber and the more liberal politicians sat on the left. This distinction has remained ever since.

Many NFL team names were chosen to sound like baseball teams.

When professional football was still in its infancy professional baseball was by far the most popular professional sport in the United States. For this reason many of the teams chose names that sounded similar to the local baseball team. Some of these teams no longer exist but there are two teams that keep the tradition alive. The Chicago Cubs inspired the name for the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Tigers helped give the Detroit Lions their name. The other NFL team still owing their name to baseball is the New York Giants. The New York Giants football team actually outlasted its baseball counterpart which moved to become the San Francisco Giants in 1957.

Sweden changed from driving on the left to driving on the right.

A law was passed in 1966 in Sweden that changed the side of the road that cars could drive on. The switch did not happen until the following year, and only after a lot of planning. On September 3rd 1967 at 4:50 AM all traffic in Sweden had to stop driving for ten minutes. During this time the drivers has to switch to the other side of road. At 5:00 AM everyone was allowed to start driving again but now they were on the right side of the road.

Until 1971 Pakistan and Bangladesh were the same country.

The modern state of Pakistan was created in 1947 after the end of British rule in India. When British India was granted independence it was split into two separate countries, India and Pakistan.
